On January 17th, 1992, Rentas De Pesca Deportivas, S.A. DE C.V. was created, offering sportfishing and Eco-Touristic tours. On March 26,1997, Equipos de Pesca de Ensenada, S.A. DE C.V. was founded to manage the concession granted by API to develop a touristic marina. Sergio Susarrey and his father, Mr. Alfonso Susarrey, have over 30 years' experience in the sportfishing industy, beginning with a small boat in the early 60's and graduating to the Ensenada Clipper, completed in 1969. The Ensenada Clipper was the first and largest vessel of its kind in the sportfishing fleet which today includes numerous other boats of varying size.

During the last 30 years, the industry has gone through many changes and many of the "old" operators are no longer in business. During the "Golden Age" of fishing (1950-1980), "cattle" boats offering sportfishing to groups of 20 to 50 anglers were the norm and fares were sold individually. Today, more personalized private charters are preferred, accomodating groups of 6 to 15 anglers. Trips of this type are slightly more expensive but offer a much more personal and memorable experience.

The shift toward smaller, more intimate groups has also had an impact on the type of boats that are used today. In place of the larger vessels, Sergio's offers modern, fully-outfitted yachts such as "El Cazador".These boats are medium in size and range from from 35-60 feet in length. The individual ticket is still available but this is not the mainstay of the sportfishing charter operators.

As part of the continuing modernization of the Ensenada area, the Susarrey group negotiated a deal with API and began development on May 15, 1997 of a new, modern marina capable of accomodating up to 30 vessels from 30 to 85 feet in length. Over $500,000 has been invested in the last two years to make this dream a reality. The brand-new facility, expected to be completed in late December 1998, opens up a whole new array of opportunities to further develop touristic commerce in the area. As an example, Sergio's Sportfishing is creating a new company that will offer quality fishing and boating accessories as a way to increase the level of service to its valued sportfishing clients.
